Jan Heaton
2001 Ringtail Ridge
Austin , Texas 78746
www.janheaton.com

Jan Heaton looks at nature a little differently than most people. She sees the pattern and complexity of shapes and forms which most of us never notice. Her observations inspire layers of translucent washes of pigment that create a collage of color, texture and value. Her images are at times calm and tranquil—a sensual and sometimes quiet look at the details of nature. And then she can surprise us with her very bold, deliberate interpretations that make the viewer look at nature with a newly illuminated perspective. Her large-format (5’ x 4’) paintings push the oft-misunderstood medium of watercolor to a new level.

Since her first solo show at Wally Workman Gallery, Austin in 2002, Jan continues to receive enthusiastic praise from collectors and critics for her undeniably unique, abstract watercolors. Her art has graced the cover of Art & Antiques (February 2005) in which she was featured as a top emerging artist.

Born in Michigan, Jan Heaton is a watercolorist who calls Austin home. She studied at Wayne State University and the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Michigan, and the University of Texas- Austin. Heaton’s watercolors are abstract, but her creative process is inspired by the structure, color, and pattern of elements in nature that are often overlooked. Her work isolates details and exposes the viewer to an everyday object or place seen from a new perspective.

In Austin Jan is represented exclusively by Wally Workman Gallery, 1202 West Sixth Street, Austin, Texas 78703, 512-4472-7428, www.wallyworkmangallery.com
